Union flags
The 2012 Summer Olympics are to blame for this. I was standing behind a barrier, at the side of a London road, watching the women's cycle race when I became aware of a jealousy relating to other spectators' flags. Not the hand held flappy things; I had some of those. I was jealous of the giant sheet-like pieces of fabric draping across people's shoulders, quivering in the breeze. I'd built up enough pride in my nation over the preceding months to confidently own and wave one, I just didn't have one. As with most things, once I had fleetingly thought of buying one my thoughts turned to making one. The rest will be history...if I ever finish them.
N.B. I didn't work from a pattern so I can't take the credit for writing one. What I did do was find a diagram in a fascinating document by The Flag Institute. From that I worked out the number of stitches needed to represent each colour on the starting row. The rest just sorted itself out (honest!).
